Sports Psychiatry Doctor
Dr Allan Johnston is a Consultant Psychiatrist with the National Health Service in England. Dr Johnston is currently employed by Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust as Consultant Psychiatrist to the Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Team where he has been responsible for a range of innovations in crisis care and facilitating early discharge from hospital.
In Derbyshire Dr Johnston chairs the Derbyshire Suicide Prevention Strategy Group and works with colleagues from across health, social care and public health to achieve this aim.
He is a Sports Psychiatrist and Trustee to the award winning State of Mind Sports charity, a mental health charity which aims to improve the mental health, wellbeing and working lives of athletes and the communities we serve.
Dr Johnston was employed as World Rugby League’s first Sports Psychiatrist by the Bradford Bulls RLFC over the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons and now works with athletes from diverse fields from Rugby & Football to the Ballet.
He is widely published in both Liaison & Sports Psychiatry across a variety of print, traditional and social media including the recently published Oxford Handbook of Sports Psychiatry. He has spoken at a range of Sports Psychiatry events including Successive RCPsych International congresses, The Maudsley’s Game Changing in Mental Health, RFL and Sports Chaplaincy UK conferences.
Allan lives in South Yorkshire with his family and enjoys all sports from Aizkolaritza to Zui-Quan.
